HEALTH & SAFETY
Calumet’s Standards Define High Quality Oils
- Feedstock Selection
- Process Controls for Purity
- ISO 9001:2015 Quality Systems
Selected Crudes
A combination of crude/feedstock selection and process engineering gives us the ability to “tailor-make” our products for specific uses. This versatility allows us to make very safe oils, which have unique properties for many applications.
FDA Information:
Please contact a Product Support Specialist for the FDA status of the product you are interested in.
Carcinogenic Information:
Non-Carcinogenic
The FDA Ultraviolet Purity Test spectroscopically measures PNA content an oil using the absorbance value at 280-290nm. This test is an industry-accepted predictor of the carcinogenetic status of oil and is utilized by Calumet operations as a manufacturing control in the production of our oils to affirm that they are non-carcinogenic.
Modified Ames Test
The Modified Ames Test is a predictor of carcinogenicity in petroleum oils by Modified Salmonella/Microsome Mutation Assay – Calumet oils are regularly evaluated by this analysis.
IP-346
IP 346 is used as a screening assay for dermal carcinogenicity. This test measures Polycyclic Aromatics in petroleum fractions. We maintain an IP-346 value of less than 3% for many of our products. Contact a Product Support Specialist for details on the product you are interested in.
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
Two of the most important references for assessing the carcinogenic potential of a substance have been published by the IARC. All Hydrocal, Calpar, Calsol 5, Calight and Calpro oils <3000 SUS@100° F are considered Class 4 (severely hydrotreated oils) according to the 1984 IARC Monograph 33; and Group 3 according to the 1987 IARC grouping in their Supplement 7.

REACH
Technical Information – REACH
In 2006, the European Union published the REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) legislation. REACH was adopted to help protect against the risks that chemicals can pose to the health of people and the environment. It also reduces animal testing by promoting alternative methods for the hazard assessment of substances.
As a manufacturing company in the United States, Calumet/Penreco has fully registered all of our substances directly exported to the EU by Calumet. Calumet has a REACH Implementation Team to address these important issues. If you have any questions, please contact us.
